Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran

Welcome to the magnificent Nglanggeran Ancient.

Here you can reach a volcanic peak, featuring scenic hiking trails, and beautiful florals.

Located in Nglanggeran Village, Patuk District, Gunungkidul Regency which is in the Baturagung Mountains, Special Region of Yogyakarta.

The mountain that was formed about 60-70 million years ago. It comes from the seabed volcano which is lifted and then becomes land. Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran has very distinctive rocks because it is dominated by agglomerates and volcanic breccias.

The peak of the Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran is 700 meters above sea level, takes about 50-60 minutes to reach the summit, becoming one of the sunrise spots that is often hunted by sunrise lovers.

At the beginning of the climb, you will go through a permanent staircase, then pass through the Pendopo Joglo Kalisongo. Then you will pass through a dead end hallway, like a large boulder known as Song Gudel.

This time you will be amazed and your heart will beat faster, because you pass through the tunnel called Lorong Sumpitan, a narrow gap in Gunung Bagong. The hallway is the prima donna for the climbers who visit Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran. Passing through this tunnel is enough to make the heart beat faster because of the passage which is only for one person and your left and right is a mountain that is hundreds of years old, with a fairly uphill climbing route.

It doesn't stop there, before you climb the tree ladder that is arranged vertically, you have to pass a rock that is pinched in the corridor, as if it becomes a gate before arriving at post one, where there is one of the peaks on this Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran, and is called the Gunung Bagong. Just like the other mountains, the peak of Gunung Bagong, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the green scenery. Don't forget to take a selfie and upload it to your social media.

The summit in Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran has a rather roomy condition but cannot be used for camping / setting up tents. If you want to go camping or set up a tent, you can simply slide it down about 50 meters. There is a camping ground which is a very strategic place to take a shelter from the strong winds at the top of the ancient volcano.

In addition to the potential of ancient volcanoes, in the Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran, some rare faunas and floras are also found, such as tremas (medicinal plants that only live in the ancient volcano ecotourism area), and long-tailed monkeys.

Not far from Gunung Api Purba Nglanggeran, at about 495-500 meters above sea level, there’s embung (retention basin) called Embung Nglanggeran. It is a 5,000 square meters water reservoir used to collect rainwater to irrigate the longan, durian and rambutan orchards around the embung. In the dry season, farmers can use the water to irrigate the fields.

Wonder how to get there? No need to worry, there’s a stair that can be used by the visitors to go up to the embung.

Another a-must-see tourist attraction is Taman Prasejarah Nglanggeran (Nglanggeran Pre-historical Park). It is basically an educational park equipped with ancient statues, historical images in stone, and various traditional games that are rarely found today. This park is perfect for increasing educational knowledge, especially for children. There are traditional games that will remind us of our childhood and the joy of playing simple games without gadgets.
