Hello from Geoforest Turunan!

It’s a non geological site in Gunungkidul area that is included in the list of Mount Sewu Geosite which has been designated as part of the Global Geopark Network (GGN) by UNESCO. The area covers a forest area in the western tip of Gunungkidul, which includes the village of Girisuko, Panggang District, Gunungkidul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta.

Geoforest Turunan or also well-known as Watu Payung Turunan is located in Dusun Turunan, Girisuko Village, Panggang District, Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta. The distance from the city of Yogyakarta is approximately 28 kilometers. 


It takes about one hour drive from Yogyakarta City to Watu Payung. The easiest route is via Jalan Imogiri Barat then continuing towards south to Jalan Imogiri-Siluk.

Just follow the main road to the hilly area. The road will be quite uphill and winding so make sure that the condition of the vehicle is qualified enough to pass the road. Oh, don’t worry about getting lost, because there will be a signpost at an intersection towards Watu Payung.

The journey continues east on Jalan Turunan. About 450 meters driving, turn left on the cast road which is the entrance to Watu Payung. Soon you will find a retribution post with a ticket price of only IDR 5,000 per person, and open from 04.45 AM to 09.00 PM Indonesia Western Time.


The name Watu Payung is taken from the unique stone shape of a large umbrella. Meanwhile, Geoforest Watu Payung Turunan is the name that is popularly being used recently.

With the artistic touch of the creative hands of the citizens of Yogyakarta, blend with the natural beauty of the surroundings has made this location which was originally only hills turn to a popular and favorable spot among tourists.

There are several photo spots in this place, namely Hasta Hapsari with the idea of the story of the seven angels in the legend of Joko Tarub, then the Goro-Goro Bridge as a symbol of mutual cooperation, which tells the struggle of local community groups to develop the Watu Payung area.
