Area Borobudur


Who doesn’t know the famous and magnificent Borobudur Temple? It is one of the Seven Wonders that is also the world's largest Buddhist temple.

The temple that has been determined as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO is located in  Magelang Regency, not far from the town of Muntilan, Central Java, Indonesia.

It consists of nine stacked platforms, six square and three circular, topped by a central dome. It is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The central dome is surrounded by 72 Buddha statues, each seated inside a perforated stupa.

The Shailendra dynasty built this largest Buddhist monument in the world between AD 780 and 840. It was the time when The Sailendra ruled the dynasty in Central Java. It was built as a place for glorifying Buddha and a pilgrimage spot to guide mankind from worldly desires into enlightenment and wisdom according to Buddha. 

This monument was then discovered by the British in 1814 under Sir Thomas Stanford Raffles, it was until 1835 that the entire area of the temple was cleared.


Borobudur is built in the style of Mandala which symbolizes the universe in Buddhist teaching. This structure is square shaped with four entry points and a circular center point. 

Going from the exterior to the interior, there are three zones of consciousness represented, with the central sphere representing unconsciousness or Nirvana. Those zones are: Kamadhatu, Rupadhatu, and Arupadhatu.

There are also a total of 504 Buddha are in meditative pose, and the 6 different hand positions represented throughout the temple, often according to the direction the Buddha faces, and on the way to the main stupa, you will pass a series of passageways and steps, where 1,460 beautiful relief panels are engraved on the walls.

Borobudur Temple is also famously known for its beautiful sunrise and sunset moment. Sunrise at Borobudur offers a different experience. The visitors were given a special pass to enter the monument early in the morning at 04.30 AM before the regular operating hour. They will take a walk from the Manohara Hotel to Borobudur, then they can enjoy the scenic view of Borobudur and the nearby five mountains when the sun rises.

As for the sunset, for those who wanted to witness the sunset from Borobudur will be given more time to stay in Borobudur until 06.15 PM. The activity ended with a complimentary tea and light meal in Manohara Hotel restaurant.
